J.J McDonnell was founded in 1945 and was originally located in the downtown Baltimore Seafood Market. In the early days of the business, fresh fish product was purchased from the docks and then resold to buyers from a vendors stall in the market. Over the years J.J McDonnell became known for its oysters, crabmeat and shrimp. In 1984, the firm relocated its operations to the Maryland Seafood Market in Jessup, Maryland.

Over time, the company's business focus has transitioned from fresh fish to predominantly frozen seafood products and today; the product mix is equally divided between fresh and frozen products. J.J McDonnell has established a market leadership position in the greater Baltimore, Washington D.C, and Northern Virginia areas as a provider of high quality seafood products and services to white tablecloth restaurants, exclusive caterers, and boutique food stores. The company excels at sourcing an extremely wide variety of seafood products from around the globe that includes exotic fish, shellfish, crustaceans, and specialty items such as caviar.

In addition to its extremely wide range of products, J.J McDonnell's sales people provide customers with information and knowledge on product differentiation, catch locations and seasonality, seafood display and presentation, and culinary ideas. A critical element to the companys success is its strict avocation to quality and sanitation. J.J McDonnell is both FDA and HACCP certified and compliant and has an interstate license to transport live shellfish. The company is recognized for the cleanliness of its operating facilities and the way it stores and processes its seafood inventories.

Product personnel are very knowledgeable in the grading of products and only high quality seafood is accepted into inventory. Our cutting room processors are aware of the particular needs of individual customers and prepare fresh cut orders accordingly. Most of the customers orders are packaged and delivered by a team of Driver Representatives. These individuals select products according to customer preference and deliver them utilizing the company fleet of clean and well-maintained refrigerated trucks. Delivery timing and temperature control are critical to our customers success and J.J McDonnell's route operations people focus on these key aspects of customer service.
