The clock is ticking in Atlantic Canada. The Oysters have been living off their own protein for several months now and will soon become too weak to ship. One way to tell is the opacity of the meats. An Oyster that is feeding heavily will appear meaty and have little or no opacity. Great Lakes Fish (Walleye, White Bass, Perch): Fishing has slowed down tremendously due to a recent algae bloom. This bloom has spread throughout the western basin of Lake Erie and half of Lake St. Claire. Until the algae is gone finding fish will be difficult.

J.J. McDonnell has partnered with Oyster Recovery Partnership to collect used oyster shells, a limited natural resource, and promote the expansion of oyster beds in the Chesapeake Bay. ORP reseeds used shells with spat (baby oysters) to repopulate the Bay, which has been hurt by historical overfishing and environmental causes. J.J. McDonnell is the only seafood distributor participating in the program and expects to greatly increase the number of shells available for reuse to ORP.
